San Diego, CA

San Diego, California's second largest city, is sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean on the west and desert and mountains on the east providing a geographic variety to match the city's cultural diversity. Its Native American and Spanish Missionary heritage is visible throughout the region, and today's residents enjoy a thriving arts scene, museums, and a year-round schedule of festivals. Home to a laid back lifestyle, San Diego also boasts mild weather year-round, miles of pristine beaches, and plentiful recreational opportunities.

Ocean Discovery Institute

Ocean Discovery Institute works to empower urban and diverse young people to protect our ocean and natural environment, improve the health of our communities, and strenthen our quality of life. Through education, scientific research, and environmental stewardship the curriculum is designed to engage youth early in their elementary school years and to retain their involvement through high school, college and beyond. In order to maximize the impact of services, Ocean Discovery Institute focuses on a single geographic area - the City Heights community - and engages residents of all ages through school-based, after-school, and community initiatives.

Notre Dame AmeriCorps members provide formal and informal science instruction through a variety of programs. Through the School-Based Initiative members are trained to support teacher-lead classroom lessons by providing hands-on classroom activities and outdoor laboratory lessons for 3rd-6th graders. Members also have the opportunity to serve through the Leaders Initiative and engage middle school, high school, and college age youth in field-based learning through a series of interconnected after-school and summer programs. In addition, members help provide a series of supports that help elevate the barriers that these youth face on their path to college and careers in science and conservation.
