Known as the Windy City, Chicago is the third largest metropolis in the nation and has a history of diversity and rich cultural heritage. Members serve this dynamic city as teacher’s aides, ESL teachers, childcare providers, and assist clients at a homeless shelter by teaching life skills and offering other services and resources.

Learning Resource Center (Notre Dame High School for Girls) is an integral part of the services provided to students at Notre Dame High School who need support outside of the classroom. The LRC offers students individualized attention and guided practice in developing and utilizing good study habits. The role of the NDA member is to serve as the supervisor of the LRC. The duties include maintain an attendance log of students assigned to the LRC, assist students in developing and utilizing good study skills, and monitor student progress in the LRC. Marillac Social Service Center

Marillac Social Service Center is a 90+ year old social service agency that works with a population ranging from young children to senior citizens, providing both educational and social services. The NDA position is for a child-care worker who creates a safe and fun environment that encourages the children’s participation in a variety of age-appropriate recreational activities. This volunteer should have enthusiasm for working with young people.

PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) is an ecumenical faith movement operating a drop-in facility that provides food, clothing, and available resources to people who are homeless in southwest Chicago. The Notre Dame-AmeriCorps member provides life-skills education to PADS' homeless guests and encourages a spirit of volunteerism among them, leading by example. This service position requires a member who is flexible and is able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. S/he displays an attitude of respect toward clients/guests, engaging them as much as possible (and with the approval of the supervisor) in shelter activities.

San Miguel School - Gary Comer Campus is a middle school and social services organization that serves low-income children and their families in the far west side (Austin neighborhood) of Chicago. Programs offered include a middle school for grades 5 - 8, after school programs, "Renaissance" programs, and organized athletics. In addition, the school is teamed up with St. Joseph's Services, which offers counseling, adult education, and other social service to the immediate neighborhood. The NDA member will work to build relationships with adolescents, young adults and their families; work with and follow the guidance of a lead team of teachers; provide tutoring, mentoring and intervention for most at-risk students; and assist the teaching team with the planning and implementation of individual education plans within the curriculum.

St. Angela School is an inner city elementary school located on the Westside of Chicago. St. Angela currently serves 250 African-American students from pre-school through the eighth grade. NDA members are needed to be teacher assistants particularly at the preprimary and primary levels. Teacher assistants duties include one-on-one tutoring and small group tutoring, assisting in the preparation of lessons, grading papers, supervising lunch and recess, chaperoning field trips, teaching conflict resolution in the classroom, and interacting with students in the after-school program.

St. Joseph Services

St. Joseph Services is an outreach ministry serving families and individuals at risk in the Humboldt Park and Austin Community. Members serve at Casa de Providencia and at a community center at San Miguel School.

  • Casa de Providencia- At Casa Providencia, immigrant and inner-city families have access to an after school program for children (ages 9-14), English as a Second Language Classes (ESL), computer labs, and spirituality programs. NDA volunteers take a lead role in planning, teaching and coordinating classes and activities for the After School Program for children, English as a Second Language Classes, and computer labs.

  • Community Center at San Miguel- St. Joseph Services is developing a community center offering programs to serve youth and adults in the Austin community at San Miguel School. The NDA volunteer will assist in developing and implementing a tutoring program for junior high and high school students, plan and implement service projects, coordinate holiday donations, plan sports activities, and teach computer classes. Evening and weekend availability required.

The Center of Higher Development provides computer training, practical life skills, and educational resources via technology at seven apartment complexes, primarily on Chicago’s South Side. Apartment residents receive help with resume writing, Internet job searches, and SAT, ACT and GED enrichment. At a minimum, the NDA member must be at ease working with both children and adults. A GED or high school diploma and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs are required; a bachelor’s degree in computer science or liberal studies is preferred.

The Miracle Center, located in the Hermosa neighborhood on Chicago’s northwest side, offers an arts-oriented after-school program and summer camp. Under the supervision of the program director, the NDA member is responsible for implementing these activities. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

•Tutor youth
•Design and implement a club for arts, sports, or other fun, engaging activity.
•Clubs/curricula should be based on a particular skill, such as dance, drama, arts, music, photography, etc.
•Communicate wit parents and teachers regarding student progress and needs.
•Be a role model for appropriate behavior.
•Assume initiative and responsibility.

The NDA member will be fully integrated into The Miracle Center’s staff meetings and professional development activities.
