St. Anthony-Immaculate Conception School is located on the southern end of San Francisco's Mission District. It offers a modified year-round schedule, which offers short, frequent breaks throughout the year, thereby helping students retain what they have learned. Programs include computer lab and classroom computers for instruction and internet access (K-8), departmentalized instruction in grades 6-8, interscholastic athletics for grades 3-8, Choir/Dance/Drama, tutoring, counseling services, student leadership programs, and activities for parental and family involvement.

Families Forward is a multicultural family literacy program that serves low-income families living in or near Redwood City. The program provides Parent Education workshops twice monthly, on-site ESL classes for adults Monday-Thursday, and a bilingual (English/Spanish) high quality licensed preschool program for 3-5 year olds. One-on-one and small group instruction provided by NDA members provides students in the preschool the additional attention they need to succeed academically when they enter kindergarten. NDA members' responsibilities include providing individual and small group instruction to students, and assisting the master classroom teacher. Members also assist with parental involvement, encouraging parents to participate in their children's education.

 

Fair Oaks School is a multicultural K-5 school serving the community of Redwood City. One-on-one and small group tutoring activities are provided to improve the students' academic skills and to develop their leadership abilities. After-school enrichment programs and parental involvement in the students' education are encouraged. NDA members' responsibilities include providing individual and small group instruction to students, assisting classroom teachers, and participating in after-school programs.

Garfield Community School is a multicultural K-8 school serving the community of North Fair Oaks in Redwood City. NDAmeriCorps volunteers focus their time between one-on-one and small group tutoring activities to support the students' academic skills, and leading student engagement projects (Student Council, Peace Patrols, Gator Buddies, etc) to develop students’ leadership and community building abilities. Depending on their interests, skills, and ability to speak at least some basic Spanish, NDA members may also participate in Family Engagement activities (parent nights, workshops for families, promoting community events, etc.) as part of the exciting experiences that a full-service community school has to offer. Over the year members get to understand the full scope of what a Community school is, and to be immersed in the local community with the help of the community school coordinator.

Project READ, located in Redwood City, California, is a public library program which provides tutoring, dropout prevention services, and critical thinking education for children and adults. After-school enrichment programs for children using various methods including storytelling, finger plays, and language enrichment are also provided. Other programs offered are Families for Literacy (FFL), Kids in Partnership (KIP), and training for high school tutors who teach at-risk elementary school students.

Facilitator of After-School and Familiy Literacy Programs and Activities: NDA members can participate in all Project READ programs. Their responsibilities include tutoring students and preparing for and participating in after-school programs. Members may also assist with parental involvement programs that encourage parents to participate in their children's education.

Facilitator of Literacy Programs at San Mateo County Jail: NDA members work with inmates who participate in the Project READ program at the San Mateo County Jail. Courses offered include Tutor Training, Poetry, and FATHERS (Fathers as Teachers: Helping, Encouraging, Reading, Supporting), which encourages responsible behavior by promoting literacy among the incarcerated and their families. NDA members' responsibilities include developing class plans and course outlines for the program, participating in the selection and testing of inmates, providing instruction to classes of no more than 15, and tutoring inmates on an individual basis. Members also assist the inmates in establishing positive, supportive relationships with family members and other community members, and work toward improving the educational levels of the inmates.

Sequoia High School is a multicultural high school serving the community of Redwood City. In a stimulating and caring community, Sequoia provides an education program which promotes respect for cultural diversity, which requires academic and vocational excellence, critical thinking and communication skills, which inspires appreciation of the arts, which develops responsibility, self-esteem, and self-direction, and which ensures educational success for all students.

Under the supervision of the Teen Resource Center Director and the school administration, NDA members provide academic support, mentoring, and after-school activities for the students who are referred to them. They work with each student to develop a written action plan to address the specific issues that are interfering with his/her school success. Accordingly, they meet at least weekly with each assigned student, help them establish contacts with onsite and offsite student support services that promote success, and follow up with referrals for support services to ensure that assigned students have made appropriate connections and are continuing satisfactorily in their program. NDA members also assist with the SAFE afterschool program which includes tutoring selected students and assisting with the AVID Program.

The ability to speak Spanish is a requirement for placement in this position.
